A gluten free diet is necessary for three major health reasons. The first is to combat and overcome celiac disease. This disease is a digestive condition that is brought about by the consumption of the protein gluten. This protein is found in breads, pastas, muffins, cookies and other foods containing barley, wheat or rye. The digestive condition is an immune reaction in the small intestines and manifests itself in abdominal pain and other intestinal related symptoms. The body will not be able to absorb certain nutrients and over time this can cause vitamin deficiency that can damage vital organs through lack of nourishment.

The next major health reason is gluten intolerance. The symptoms of this intolerance are very similar to celiac disease, but without the damage to the intestine. Gluten intolerance has been linked to fatigue, anxiety and depression. The last major health reason is an allergy to wheat. This is separate to the other two health concerns and people with this allergy can develop rashes or hives and a stomach pain after consuming wheat. (Also called non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance.)

Celiac disease and gluten intolerance are hard to detect. But if you are showing the signs of someone with a vitamin deficiency or have intestinal pain after eating certain foods, you are advised to try a gluten free diet to reverse these symptoms. Total elimination of gluten is essential to reduce discomfort and heal the intestines. This is a shock for many and they can find their meals suddenly bland. Many people are under the misconception that a gluten free diet simply involves avoiding breads, but gluten is in a surprisingly large amount of processed foods.
